Scam type
Pig butchering & fake investment scams
A long con where a stranger builds trust, then lures you into a fake trading or crypto platform that shows fake profits and blocks withdrawals.
"Pig butchering" (sha zhu pan) scams combine a romance or friendship approach with a fake investment platform. The scammer spends weeks building trust before introducing a "can't-lose" crypto or forex opportunity.
How it works
You are shown a slick app or website with rising balances and small successful withdrawals to build confidence. Once you deposit larger amounts, withdrawals are blocked and you are asked for "taxes" or "fees" to release funds — money that never comes.
Warning signs
- A stranger online quickly steers the conversation to investing
- Guaranteed or unusually high returns
- A platform only they recommended
- Small early withdrawals work, large ones do not
- You are asked to pay a fee or tax to withdraw
