Scam type
Romance scams
A fake online relationship used to extract money or lure you into a fraudulent investment.
Romance scammers build an emotional relationship over weeks or months, then engineer a crisis or an "opportunity" that requires your money — often routed into crypto to make it hard to trace.
How it works
The relationship feels real, but the person avoids video calls and meeting in person. Eventually money is requested for an emergency, travel, or a shared investment.
Warning signs
- Refuses or always cancels video calls and in-person meetings
- Professes strong feelings very quickly
- Asks for money, gift cards, or crypto
- Introduces an investment opportunity
- Story details do not add up
